In other wheat varieties, Nilsson-Ehle found F 2 generations with a ratio of red kernels to white of 63:1. These could be explained by assuming that three pairs of alleles were involved. In these cases, six different shades of red could be detected, but the color differences were very slight. Nilsson-Ehle, crossed two varieties of wheat, red and white in colour and found that all the F 1 offsprings were intermediate between red and white i.e., light red colour, showing that red is incompletely dominant over white. When the F 1 hybrids were self-fertilized the F 2 progenies or offsprings showed a ratio of 15 red to 1 white. Early support for this multiplefactor hypothesis came from H. Nilsson- Ehle (1909), a - Swedish geneticist working on various cereal crops. Many of the characters that he examined yielded 3:1 ratios in the F2 generation following the cross of two parental strains, consistent with Nilsson-Ehle (1908) obtained the first experimental proof of polygenic inheritance in case of kernel colour in wheat.
